Day 311: Late Afternoon

I had a bit of a trying day and talked about it — a lot. Sorry about that. Upshot was that I got going very late this afternoon.

Oh, and I both trimmed and reduced the volume on the “darn dog” πŸ™‚

OK, let’s hear it. What could be the draw for you to want to sign with a major publisher? I can’t imagine it being any less frustrating than working with Ridan is now, even if you managed the impossible and were offered monetary compensation anywhere near approaching what you might make on your own and they didn’t want to try to indefinitely hold all of the rights to and for everything while keeping you in a nice quiet box off to the side.

If you’re priority right now is making the most money, you should probably be working on a new Ishmael story. Oh … on second thought I guess it wouldn’t work to release that before the last half of the Share series is out, huh? Still, having it ready to go ASAP would no doubt bring in a lot of revenue from starved fans and might, just maybe, save you from a whole lot of hate mail from people when they finish reading Owner’s Share by offering them the next bit of the journey. Of course, you’re much closer to having Zypheria’s Call or even South Coast ready to be making money soonest and the way to grow sales of Ravenwood is to put out a sequel, but I still don’t see the numbers approaching the Shares.

I like the idea of giving your new short story to StarShipSofa. It sounds like one that would be suited to audio better than text.

On a side note, I am to a point in Captain’s Share (again) that bothers me every time I get to it. Jen mentioned to Ishmael that she’s never done it on a star ship before and Ish says he hasn’t either. Must have been one unmemorable night he had with whatshername on the fast packet the night before docking at Diurnia for the first time. Also kind of hard to believe Ish and Bev remained hands-off during the ride on the Bad Penny. Just sayin. πŸ™‚

It was not a US publisher. The attraction was having an alternate stream. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out, but it could have made me a household name in another country.

As for Ish and Jen, it should tell you a lot about his relationship with her.

      • Laith says:

Oh man, I hadn’t noticed Ish’s little falsehood there.

One thing I love about your stories, there are always more little details to tease out of them.

      • Tony says:

That makes a bit more sense. Sorry if it sounded bad, but I didn’t get it.

Also … a new side of Ishmael! I honestly hadn’t thought beyond “he forgot” or “it was a mistake.” That’s kind of exciting. πŸ™‚

  2. Patrick says:

Thanks for not selling your soul to the establishment

On another note if and when you get an offer for tv or movie rights stick with a uk house they are more likely to produce a season 2 through 6 instead of a single season in usa

    • Tara Li says:

Maybe, Patrick – but remember, for the most part, the BBC will put out 5 or 6 episodes and call that a season (though actually, they call each season a series, for reasons that probably make British sense, and not American sense). Of course, American productions are moving to 13 episode half-seasons, so …

Truth be told, I’m seeing TV Movies/mini-series for the Share Sextet – and that’s kinda iffy. They’re really not told in the mode that would make great movies or TV series.

I mean – certainly, a visual production could be made. And I for one would love it. I haven’t seen anyone doing the “Who Should Play” game yet, but it could get interesting. (Dr. Lowell – do *YOU* have any ideas who should play Ish in a movie or TV series?) Ultimately, though – I don’t think it would sell in near enough volume to make it a project that would get greenlighted. It would have to be a fandom project done mostly out of love – though I imagine a fair bit could be raised from a Kickstarter offer.

At the very least, the first two books are really problematic from a visual arts point of view, and yet they’re critical to setting up who Ish is, in the minds of the audience. Let’s look at it – Quarter Share, 1st Act: Ish, various visitors, his mother’s apartment. 2nd Act: Ish, on board the Lois, mostly back and forth between his bunk area, and the mess deck – lots of visual interest in him scrubbing coffee urns, serving food, sitting at the tables talking trading with Pip. 3rd Act: Ish wandering the Orbital flea market. Half Share, 1st Act – Ish learns to stand watch in the Environmental Section. 2nd Act: Ish sets up the Co-Ed Crochet team, and visits Henri Roubaille. 3rd Act: Ish visits a night club – we get a nice fade to black if we’re going to avoid the R rating.

As a narration audiocast, or a written work – it’s awesome. To turn it into a movie – it’d take a genius.

Now… Who should play Ish? Wil Wheadon in the later books, obviously – he’d be perfect for the Ish of Captain’s Share and Owner’s Share. I don’t keep up with movies or TV actors that much any more, though… Erin Grey, though – perfect Captain Giggone.

      • Patrick says:

true the bbc 3 would be only 3 to 5 but ITV would be a better bet for england, but the best bet would be Space tv in Canada or Showcase

        • Patrick says:

It could be done and yes there would have to make adaptions from the first 3 books sorta like B5 with no aliens. There are alot shows in canada and UK that the general pop us will never see if you know how to change your IP to a different country there is a boat load of new content to explore

  3. Ignatz says:

    Nate,

I’m so sorry that the “Let’s do lunch sometime” secenario ultimately turned out to be more on the lines of “Let’s do you over lunch sometime”. It isn’t right, it isn’t fair and – yes – you sort of already knew that the norms of the publishing industry offerings were nothing to write home about. How disappointing. πŸ™

Tony has the right of it: “If you’re priority right now is making the most money, you should probably be working on a new Ishmael story.” But I slightly disagree with him about it not working to release it at this point. Truely, the podcast world is out of sync with the (slower) e-book publishing, but the extra excitement generated by releasing another book in the Trader’s Tales series (even as podcast) could only help stimulate sales of the existing offers for eBooks while providing more incentive to get the rest of the series out to the world in a more timely fashion.

    • Tony says:

To clarify, I was suggesting he couldn’t release it as an ebook before the rest of the Shares are out. He could definitely put it out as audio, but he wouldn’t make any money there other than donations.

  4. Tara Li says:

Just noticed that your route and progress hasn’t been being plotted for the last couple of days – and then looked back and don’t see it for quite a while… Clicking for the larger version of the map suggests that a file went missing – specifically:

520 seems to be the latest in that directory…
