People have to stop thinking of writing as a holy calling and start thinking of it in terms of a business. (Or at least try to think of it as a mixture of both.) If you have a good product and have a modicum of common sense, there is no reason why you can’t be successful as a self-pub. But you have to do the research and put in the time and the work. It’s depressing how many people don’t realize this.
