Day 1735: Burnside

I’ve never understood the fascination with David Burnside. I did such a crappy job with him as a character, I just wanted him to go away but every time I turn around somebody else is asking “Will we find out what happened to Burnside?” I talked about that today.

FWIW, the geese came through pretty well. However, I have no memory of who David Burnside was, so I’m not itching to find out what happened to him.

  2. Charles Carroll says:

Wouldn’t it be interesting if you had something happen to Burnside that would totally turn his character around and you could explore a redeemed person who could become an archetype? Just thinking.

    • Nathan says:

      I killed him.

He’s gone. Off the table. I really don’t like how I wrote him. If I’m going to do the anti-hero change-up pitch, I’m going to do it with a character that is well drawn from the beginning instead of a cardboard cut-out that’s so two dimensional he crinkles when he walks. 🙂

  3. WILLIAM WELDON says:

Yeah but the thing about him was he was an arrogant ass who knew the rules well enough to walk that thin line between rule follower and rule breaker. He also was every readers’ worst nightmare of a boss. That is why we wanted some Karma to come his way…

  4. Chuck Green says:

There were just too many of those uncertainties that are still flying about… When Mr. Pall (sp.?) discovered the reason their trips were taking longer than they should, it had Burnside’s fingerprints on it. Until now, we weren’t sure that he wasn’t plotting Ish’s demise. To me, it’s completely conceivable that Burnside was working with Mr. Simpson. He may have been a caricature, but he was efficient.

  5. Roger Cook says:

Aye Captain. Reporting for duty Sar! Tis it still possible to participate in the Beta of Darkness Forged?
