Day 206: Monday Muttering

If yesterday felt lethargic, this morning felt invigorating. I went out before it was light but it didn’t seem to slow me down. Lots of stuff on my mind this morning and I shared some of it.

Your discussion today at the beginning of the podcast reinforces for me the one *VERY* good reason for you to wait until it’s light to go walking. This minor thing called safety.

Then again, stuck in bed, legs crushed, having to pay off medical bills *WOULD* encourage you to write more and write faster, wouldn’t it? I guess there really is a silver lining to every cloud!

So, what happens when a very creative writer, who thrives on the excitement of sitting down at the keyboard and “letting her rip”, letting the characters go where they will, maybe telling a different story altogether than the one he thought he had, OVERPLANS his story, outlining and creating a box for his characters to live in? I don’t know if this is what has actually happened, but it does sound as if this is not an enjoyable way for you to to work. You’ve got a lot of time and energy invested in CG, but what would happen if you took Sarah as she was on the day she signed aboard the Lois and worked backward, in dreams/visions/flashbacks, to explain how she got there? I guess I’m just more interested in her life in space than her life on the planet. How does a woman with a shaman’s gifts, so closely tied to the natural forces and rhythms of the planet, live and work in such a different environment?
As far as nasty-grams from impatient readers, I’m as impatient as they come, and I can’t imagine being so pushy and demanding. Readers do not have a RIGHT to have books published on a timetable that suits us! Anyone who has raised children will
know that the ability to accept delayed gratification is a mark of maturity.
Sorry this is so long, but I do want to echo the warning to be careful when you’re walking. I had a total hip replacement some years ago, due to osteoarthritis, and one of the first signs I had that there was something bad going on was a tendency to not pick up my foot quite high enough to stride forward properly. This resulted in “stubbing” my toe and ultimately caused a couple of VERY nasty falls. Be careful!

This is a very interesting idea, Joyce, and one I’ve been considering.

The working backwards thing .. not the nasty grams 😀

That was a funny ending today. It sounded like you were lost in another world, looked up and suddenly realized you were home. It just caught my funny bone. 🙂

Ummm, I don’t know about the rest of your fans, but I’m getting plenty to read between Free Friday at B&N and your guest posts on Presents. Well, I also have the elibrary locally. I’d like to think these people have plenty to read and that they are more concerned about your making enough money to keep food on the table, etc.

Ridan has been instrumental in showing me some new authors. I like that. I like that they have epubs available. My complaint has been that I’ve ordered epubs directly from them and had to wait more than a day to get them and this was after emailing, tweeting, bitching and moaning. I really wish they would get that part of things fixed. It gives the impression of chaos or an awful lot of work going on there. I suppose the expectation is that people will go to Amazon to get their books. If so, why offer them on their site? That has nothing to do with your morning monologue which I very much enjoyed, except that it contains the word “Ridan.” 🙂

  4. If I may offer a humble suggestion. Since you feel there are stories to be told in both Kleesport and Northport why not name the book after the bay that links them both? Something like Heron Bay (or whatever avian Tanyth is destined to link up with next) would make a lovely title and encompass both of the towns and the boat journey between them as well.

  5. Tony says:

Tanyth in a city …. hmm, I honestly can’t imagine how that would turn out!

Very good podcast this morning. The Big Six Publishers have just cost me another author I really like. Naomi Novik’s new boot will be $12.99 on Kindle with the hardcover $13.99. No way I will pay that so I deleted her website from my feed reader and sent her an e-mail saying I am sorry I can’t read her books anymore due to the greed of her publisher. Come on an ebook $1.00 less the a hardcover do they think we are that stupid. I hate the word stupid but it fits here.

    • Laith says:

Personally while I would have contacted the author to let them know I wouldn’t be purchasing the new book and why I don’t think I would have stopped trying to follow an author I like for those reasons.

I agree $1 diff against hardcover is completely absurd.

  7. Laith says:

    Nate,

As I’m sure you know from the fan boards when you are pod-casting new books I can get really jumpy for new material.

But I agree with the others while the delays from your publisher are annoying 2 books in a year is (as you said on the walk) way better than most major pubs.

I’m good with reading material at the moment, my books to read and review pile has gotten to the point I’m probably going to hand a few to my wife and brother to read/review so while I want to buy the books to support you I’m not short on reading material.
