You mention interest in a Jesuit scientist. One I know of is Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. He was a paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of the Peking Man. Teilhard was not allowed to publish during his lifetime. He died in 1955. You might get something from reading about him.
