   The pilgrimage that has always fascinated me is the ancient Christian pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in northern Spain. The bones of the apostle James the Greater are purportedly buried there – – James is the patron saint of Spain, called “Santiago,” and the pilgrimage dates back to medieval times. Millions of people have made the pilgrimage over the centuries, and it has become popular again in recent years, with fine books and even a movie written about it. Novelist Paulo Coelho, who wrote the worldwide bestseller The Alchemist, also wrote a biographical book about the journey to Santiago called The Pilgrimage. The movie I mentioned was directed by Emilio Estevez and starred his father Martin Sheen – – it is a fine movie and well worth watching.

   English courtier/explorer Sir Walter Raleigh wrote a poem about the pilgrimage to Santiago, I’ll quote the first part here:

   Give me my scallop shell of quiet,
   My staff of faith to walk upon,
   My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
   My bottle of salvation,
   My gown of glory, hope’s true gage,
   And thus I’ll take my pilgrimage.

   (The poem is titled “The Passionate Man’s Pilgrimage” and can be found via Google search). The objects mentioned in the passage – – scallop shell, staff, scrip, bottle (a gourd) and gown – – are all part of the traditional garb of the pilgrim to Santiago de Compostella.
