Day 1032: Dark Monday

I was home by the time the sun got up almost. I talked a lot about toe-hold space and how much fun I’m having with it.

Sounds like Toe-hold space is taking shape, and the stories will soon follow. Keep plugging away and I look forward to seeing the progress.

Keep that brain matter going, Cap’t.

If you’re heading out in the dark mornings now, and if you’re anywhere the roadway, please carry some sort of working light and one of those cheap worker’s-type vests that shine in a headlight would be a good purchase.

You’ve mentioned before you wear (blue ?) or maybe one morning you had on black jeans? Can’t recall. But do wear light colors. It’s often easy to forget the simple stuff until your sitting beneath a trash collecting truck wheel.

God! Now I won’t sleep a wink until I see his morning post and know he’s safely back cooking, eating, and playing Eve! 😀

Just be safe, Cap’t, that’s all any of us can ask. Sigh, wish I could afford one of those “Help” dogs for you to make sure you stayed on the sidewalk well back from the roadway, maybe back in the weeds and ditch lines where you’d be safe from injury and risk.

Have a good day, Nathan. 🙂

I’m quite excited new books and enjoy to hear about story possibilities!

I wonder if there may be similarities between Toeholds vs. TCJC locations and “public” vs. private/corporate ownership. Governments tend to invest in the initial frontier technology and ventures. Such funds and agency got us to the moon. Once corporations see the profit potential in space travel, though, I expect their R&D will leapfrog the early effort. What will happen to the ground/planet/locations claimed by governments after the corporations dominate development and expansion? Will this government-claimed, “public-owned” space become a sort of “commons” area?

Thinking about Toehold motives and activities — religion has often caused some folks to be unwilling to submit to a controlling authority. Historically, sects have split from the “mainstream” to find a place to practice their beliefs in peace. Such a settlement might stay true to its rebellious origins or might evolve into a new secular location. Consider early American settlements and their evolution.

Another thing the Toehold locations offer, as indicated in Captain’s Share, is tourism and adventure, at least that which is too small or dirty to be worth big, legit corporate investment.

The association of Toehold with “Dark” doesn’t bother me at all since space has been referred to as the deep dark in general. I can imagine at some point there was a huge TCJC corporate “light in the darkness,” campaign about safe planets and good jobs. The non-TCJC space was left untouched or perhaps even abandoned in The Dark.

Anyway, it’s fun to wonder what will unfold. I am looking forward to whatever it is!

And *THIS* is what you get for not building your universe completely before you start! Of course, if you spend too much time planning out your universe, you never actually end up writing it… So I guess you actually took the better path.

Somehow, I suspect Ish may end up *NEVER* coming out of ToeHold Space! Just out of curiosity – which is larger? ToeHold Space, or CPJCT? (in terms of population, or number of planets in use…)

Hearing you talk about playing eve is giving me the itch to start up my accounts again! Really looking forward to reading more about Toe-Hold space and the stories associated with it.

I think you have built in some places where they would not get caught already.

    **** spoilers ***

The embargo locker provides the way to mask what cargo is going where. You never explained how big it was, or was not.

The variability of jumping long or short could provide accounts for the differences in time while a ship stopped at a ‘dark’ port, same thing for the ship to ship transfers.

Maybe a scheme where cans are mis-marked and goods are smuggled. Or mixed goods, that sort of thing.

Been enjoying you hashing through stuff on the podcast. Keep walking and talking!

    • Tara Li says:

Actually, we’re given a rough idea of the size of the embargo lockers – and of course, it varies from ship to ship – but they’re no larger than a small closet, at most. And as Pip pointed out, the problem with smuggling is why run the risk at one planet, when the next planet along the route, you can sell your product legally and probably at a pretty good price.

I think one of the things that might be a relic from when these novels were first started is the current thinking that *of course* the computers are going to be hacked – which changes our perspective. It would be interested to see if the CPJCT has managed to spread the propaganda that their computers are unhackable – and perhaps even taken to believing it themselves. Just remember – far more networks are penetrated by social engineering than by actual ” ‘sploits “

The way this sounds makes me wonder why Me Arrione (sp?) wasn’t going there. Wouldn’t she have been more comfy there? Just a thought.
