I read a fair number of economics books every year, and I would recommend Economics: The User’s Guide by Ha-Joon Chang (really well written, accessible discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of various economic theories) and Thomas Picketty’s Capital in the twenty-first century – really beautiful data sets if you’re into that sort of thing, but the first half discusses theory without grinding thru the data.
