Day 151: Word Counts

This morning I’m thinking about word counts and my lack of progress. It’s time that stopped. For the record, my starting word count is 2149 for Cape Grace.

  1. Good luck with the word count. Maybe the rest of us slackers will be motivated to beat “The Lowell” each day 🙂

I’m so envious of your cool morning air! Here in the hot, steamy South it will be quite a while yet before summer loosens its grip.
I was struck as I listened this morning by the thought—erroneous, I know– that it almost sounds as if you’re afraid to write. Yet you’re a writer, you can write and have written, and are published. You are EAGER to write, but….? Perplexing, and surely very frustrating to you. And if you’re correct that the depression stems, at least in part, from lack of production, then not writing is harmful, to you and to those who care for you.
If I have intruded into your personal life, please forgive. That is a danger of a one-sided conversation where I hear you talking about your life, and come to feel that I know you, in a way. Yet YOU don’t know me, or most of your other listeners at all, and perhaps don’t appreciate personal comments.

You’re not the first person to suggest fear.

I could be in denial but I have a hard time imaging what I’d be afraid of there.

Dentists, oh yeah. Spiders, yep. Writing? Seriously?

Mostly I just find the lure of distraction too engaging, I think…

Of course, it could be denial, too. 🙂

        Hum…

I don’t get fear – just frustration – from your talk.

Here’s a thought – set up a GoogleMap kind of like the one you have here for how far you’ve walked, but think of each word as a yard – every 1760 words would be a mile on the map. Or better yet – each word is a mile, and imagine yourself walking to the Moon. Quarter Share through Double Share would have about got you there, I think, and Captain’s Share and Owner’s Share would have gotten you back.

… have you considered audio-dictation for your writing? It’s just a thought, another kind of notebook, an audio-notebook. You can transcribe the content at a later time or just use it as an inspirational kick-start when you actually get to sit down and tap out your story via the keyboard. 🙂

Just for fun, here is a podcast that is 15 minutes of motivation (usually gets me moving/thinking anyway): http://www.writingexcuses.com/

  4. Sometimes the Muse is a fickle lady. When the story’s ready, it’ll come. In the meantime just keep writing. I’m trying to do the same.

And yes, that’s where I’m having trouble. I’m “trying to” instead of “doing”.

What was it that green Muppet said about that? Hmmm….
