Today I think about numbers, story telling, and markets.

Been listening to your new “audio window to Nathan” and it is pretty cool. Just a note about sales numbers: in my humble opinion, the key to changing the trend is to sell some shorter content through Amazon Singles. I think the Amazon referral engine will continue to bring you NEW readers (and buyers) if they have some new content to chew on.

Yes, which is why I’m hoping we’re going to get Full Share out soon.

It’s also why I’m putting together the Odin’s Outpost novella. So I’ll have something to release in between. The other part is that, with more titles, I can sell fewer of them and still maintain 100 units a day.

I follow Barnes and Noble nook on Twitter and they have specials as well as Free Friday where I get introduced to many authors new to me. This is a form of publicity that I’m sure Amazon also has. If a free book is not to my liking, I feel fine about tossing it. I got a Sci Fi by Iain M. Banks for 99 cents and was more reluctant to toss it, because I paid a small amount. He is supposed to be great, but it just was too convoluted and message laden for me, I guess. So, that sits on someday-maybe. But like you said, it’s mostly recommendations from others or an author that I know. In fact, I’m also prone to try recommendations from another who has led me to something I like in the past. 🙂

Then there is Science Friday where a book comes up often. I just spent $2.99 for something on string theory and had to quit 1/3 in, because my mind was twisting, contracting, hurting… LOL

With podiobooks, they are free and I donate if I liked it–past tense. I guess that might not work so well for the usual ebook, but maybe as a publicity thing for a new author, it would be good.

I use Barnes and Noble, because my ebook reader does epub and I’m not fond of the fact that Amazon books work only on Amazon’s reader. I’m thrilled that Amazon is doing great ebook business, though, because I’m a big fan of ebooks. I’m not thrilled with their format that works on nothing else. I got the ebooks from Ridan for that reason. Now they provide formats!!

One case that really bothered me a couple of weeks back was a rather popular science blog, where the author said “Well, if you follow me on Twitter, you know why I haven’t been posting as much lately, and here’s why…” The link was to his twitter post that was nothing but a link on to a photo sharing website. Made me feel very much that anyone who didn’t follow his twitter feed was a second-class citizen, since he didn’t bother just linking straight to the picture in the first place.

I feel like I’m getting pulled in a dozen directions when I need to follow someone’s blog, their facebook page, their twitter, their myspace website, etc. I have enough tabs open to keep track of things – do I need to multiply them by four or more to keep track of the people I really like most?
