Day 199: Here Comes The Sun

I stayed in until the sun started to come up today. Really? There’s no need for me to be out in the dark and cold. I had a morning of ping-pong brain.

I’ve been listening to TOMMW for some months now and have become accustomed to the way you speak of writing as something you want to do, you need to do, you mean to do……but first, you’ve got to mow the lawn, go to the grocery store, pick up the kids, etc. Could you maybe hire a neighborhood kid to cut the grass? Get in a carpool to cut down on the time spent driving? These are all necessary things, but what is the thing that MUST be done, if you are a writer? It seems to me that writing is taking a back seat right now. Giving yourself pep talks is great, but……just do it!
Please forgive if I have intruded too far on your personal life and have given unwanted and unwelcome advice. The way TOMMW is set up leads to perhaps an illusion of familiarity on the part of the listeners that has caused me to speak where I should not…..and, too, I’m old and naturally bossy!

      No problem, Joyce.

You’re right. I need to “just do it.”

Joyce, you have hit the nail (or do I mean Nate?) on the proverbial head. 😉

I’ve also noticed this trend. You often start off by talking about how much you want to write and then go on to talk about how you have to mow and plan dinner, etc. Every once in a while I bet that lawn could go an extra day or two and a last-minute meal could be thrown together in order to free up some really solid chunks of writing time.

I’m sure that probably isn’t a new thought, but it’s one I have had a few times while listening.

A cluttered desk, a cluttered mind. A clear desk a clear mind. Maybe. I think Jung said something like “your outward expression is a reflection of your mind.” You are doing as many physical tasks as you can and avoiding your work (good excuses or not.) Your mind is doing the same. Your trip could have jolted you out of that rut just a little, if it did ask yourself why? If thinking about it makes you a little anxious, why? Time to start digging. Your beginning to sound like someone named Ishmael…….

    Hi Nate,
You sound like you are a great Dad and husband you look after your family. It’s the little moments like taking your child to one thing or the other that make for great memories for them when they are older and some may think that these things can be outsourced or dropped. But as a creative I know that they are the moments of life that give fuel to the soul and feed the creative process.

Some have pointed out that you notice your lawn most days and intend trim it. I wonder if as a binge writer if it is these little things these little moments of ritual that allow your mind to create the stories, then when ready, the story uses you to get out.

I don’t want to tell you what to do or be your shrink. I just want to say I love your work you seem like a great guy and you should be and do the things that make you happy.

    Darren

PS. Sorry for my rant. It’s just the comments today seemed a little one sided.
