I loved hearing your story, especially the description of being out there in a hurricane.
I was stationed on Governors Island for a year and a half (1965-66). During that time it transitioned from Ft. Jay, First Army HQ to Coast Guard. I was in the ER of the hospital until the CG got someone there to take my place. I gave immunizations, too. Many were for guys going to Vietnam. At the end I was asked what I would like to do and asked for and received lab school. That is a rare thing in the Army and it turned out to be a good thing. You may well have crossed a path that I crossed some years before. It’s not a huge place, but I sure did enjoy the big city after I lost my little girl fear of the place–just a short ferry ride away and the drinking age was 18 there and then.
