  1. Robert Evans says:

Ultima Online made all the mistakes that subsequent MMORPG’s have corrected. The biggest mistake – – if mistake it was – – was allowing 100% freedom of players to interact, and this included killing each other and stealing from each other. After the game was launched a playstyle happened that became known as griefing or griefplay, with the players that engaged in it known as griefers. These were players whose sole purpose in playing UO was to make other players miserable, by murdering them and stealing all of their belongings – – which was permitted in gameplay – – even if they were brand new players and had nothing valuable to steal. It was a way for sociopaths to exercise power in a game environment, and it very nearly caused the early demise of UO, because word quickly spread that the game wasn’t worth playing because of griefers. UO solved it by creating a parallel world in which killing other players or stealing from them wasn’t permitted in game mechanics, and most of the player base migrated to this parallel universe, leaving the griefers to themselves in the original universe.

Subsequent games have been very careful to limit PVP (player vs. player) gameplay.
