Day 249: NaNo Day Twenty-Nine

I got the walking desk running yesterday and I’m looking forward to trying it out today. See pics at Solar Clipper Diary.

    Nate, that is an interesting design. Whether or not you can ‘think on your feet’ over the long term remains to be seen (chuckle!). One construction detail that is missing and which might possibly be of benefit is a slightly raised, padded wrist support. That might serve to steady and somewhat isolate your hands (for typing) from the inevitable movement of the rest of your body.

    • Nathan says:

      I thought about the wrist support, but with the current set up, my wrists don’t really make it to the desktop, so there’s nothing to pad.

    I don’t really know the reasons why but a treadmill uses a different set of muscles than walking on the ground. The cardio is great but after a couple months of only using a treadmill I was able to get back outside and I thought my legs were going to fall off. Someone told me you have to push to move along the ground and the treadmill pulls your legs along thus different muscle motion or work. I found that interesting and it sure did surprise me.

    I use a mouse mostly with my laptop; so I have a shortcut to turn the touchpad off. It runs in Autostart (Ubuntu). Sometimes with logoff of locking my keyboard, I lose it; so I can do Ctrl-T to turn it off again. I don’t have a shortcut for turning it back on, but that could be done too. I’ve seen some toggle scripts.

    Anyway, mine is a short script in my user’s bin directory:

    #! /bin/sh
    xinput set-prop 12 “Device Enabled” 0

    • Nathan says:

      Thanks, Anita. That’s a good tip. I’ll look at it.

      John, I think that’s probably true. The pace is much slower, too, and it’s all very smooth and even. I’m not going to be giving up my morning walk, but as a working space, this is turning out to be pretty cool so far. First serious writing period and I got 1400 words, walked about a mile, and spent 45 minutes.

      • Red Tash says:

        Very cool! Rah! Rah! Rah! Cheering you on.

        I type like mad while the baby’s asleep, first thing in the morning. Then I click around while I hold her with the other arm, ever after. Eventually she will be more independent, but right now thanks to her big brothers’ Lego habits + her recent discovery of crawling, it’s been a lot of fun fitting in work between policing her! 😉

        Fitting in exercise will come for me, eventually. Right now dancing with the kids to the Despicable Me theme on an xBox game is as good as it’s likely to get for the winter. And I hate that because I just read in the news the other day that Woah, I’m Not Getting Any Younger, Am I?

        • Nathan says:

          Yeah, Red. That “I’m not getting any younger” piece hit me about … oh … ten years ago. By this time next year, I’m going to be 60. That’s a darn odd feeling.

    I switched hands and use my left for my mouse.
