Tanyth could easily wear the same hat on a sea voyage… by merely securing it to her head (as any sensible traveler would do when the need arose) with either (a) a built-in strap (like the Spanish used for their hats and sombreros) or else by means of a jury rigged strap (cloth, leather or even a handy length of heavy cord) up and over the top of the hat. Failing that (as you pointed out) a wool cap or else just a handy scarf tied round the head.
