Day 289: Tuesday Afternoon

A day fraught with technical difficulties. First the recorder hung about 14 minutes in (and I didn’t notice until the end) and then my first download to the laptop brought an empty file. I found the right one and cleaned out some of the cruft on my phone, then rebooted it. Perhaps tomorrow will be better. :/

I’m tempted to say that working from home sounds like you’re biggest problem, but I’m sure that’s probably my tunnel vision. At least you’ve finally got some news from Ridan. Hope you’ve got better luck with your phone tomorrow!

    • Indeed! News is an improvement over radio silence!

While I think it is laudable that you are concerned about other authors in the queue who also need to get books out, too much shuffling of feet over that seems like it could reduce the pressure on Ridan to get moving and might produce more waffling on their end too (and I’m not unsympathetic to Robin being in the situation she’s in either… but your books have been delayed for a very long time over this). I think if Robin really thinks she can go straight in to editing Captain’s Share, make sure she can. She has the obligation to the other authors, not you Nathan. Maybe she’ll even get to the other author’s books more quickly overall if she focuses and gets through them in whatever order she’s decided.

Sar you need to start implemrnting some strict office hours to help with the procrastination
or disappear at a coffee shop on a daily basis

    • I’ve thought about suggesting the same thing. In a coffee shop, you can still procrastinate, but you don’t have quite so many forces pulling you in N directions. Sometimes when I work from home instead of the office I will go to a nearby Starbucks instead for part of the time, and sometimes just the change of scenery (or perhaps the fact that there are not dishes or clothes that could be done or what have you) is sufficient to … reframe the set of things in my viewfinder so that I can focus?

      • Actually, rephrase that last bit: Reduce the number of things in my viewfinder so I can focus.

The problem is the sheer number of potential distractions, and also of raising the bar for others interrupting you. If you’re right there, it costs them very little to raise an interrupt (other than in an indirect, fuzzy way when you don’t get so many books out and don’t earn as much). Indeed, it’s so cheap that they may do so before considering it, even if they understand academically. If you’re at a coffee shop somewhere, it takes more effort to interrupt you. It doesn’t mean you can’t be reached, but there is a psychological hurdle for them to deal with that may act as a filter.
