Day 30: Inbound Marketing and High School Daze

This morning I’m still pondering marketing and thinking about my strategy as an author. I’ve done very well, but I keep thinking about ways I could do better. I think part of it is avoidance from actually thinking about writing right now. The other topic is my elder daughter and her difficulty with high school. I’m on a geek parent panel at BaltiCon so that’ll be interesting.

Overcast makes it look really dark out there …

I’m listening to you talk about writers settling on a genre fairly early on, and laughing (since I am terrible at that!), when my name suddenly pops up, together in a sentence with Nathan claiming he’s pretty genre flexible. I so need to go quote the line from the forum post where we met – something along the lines of “I’m a grumpy old man who doesn’t read out of my genre”. Thanks much for my morning giggle, and way to broaden your horizons :).

And as the parent of two little ones, it’s probably easy to say this, but many of us with mis-spent youths turn out pretty well. I wasn’t much fond of high school either, although my approach was to ace classes and escape as fast as I could.

BaltiCon has a geek parent panel? I’m going to have to venture out of Oregon one of these years…

Yeah and you’re the lady who doesn’t do audio … 🙂

      We’re a pair.

Indeed. Do you have any idea how many times I have to rewind your rambles because I missed the last five minutes? It would take me ten years to get through the Share series in audio :P.

I was in the invisible group in high school. I did get a school letter–from selling so many candy bars in the fund raiser, but I lost it years ago. It did not mean anything to me. Just a comment. However, I wanted to talk about genre. Most readers don’t care about genre, really. We read a lot and would like to read a good book. I also get upset when people try to categorize music. “What kind of music do you like?” Well, good classical, good jazz, good blues, good new age, well, you get the picture. I like good sci fi, good fantasy, good classics (love Twain and have read and enjoyed ACYIKAC-your daughter would like it I bet), good books. What I don’t like is music or books, famous or not, that bore me. Some may like them, but I don’t. Have tried James Joyce and have never made it past the first chapter or two. Some folks think he is the bees knees. Fine. Give me Steinbeck, Lee and Miller, Lowell, occasional romances if well written, history (love Will and Ariel Durant) . Genres are so misleading. Ok, rant over. Sorry.
