In re Hansel & Gretel and fairy tales: There’s a show that’s in its first season on ABC called “Once Upon a Time” which has some interesting twists on fairy tales. It’s quite good.
On the topic of McGuffin cargoes: You mentioned the “the cargo is a person” twist, but that you didn’t want to do something too cliched. I’m sure that I’m just forgetting (or unaware of) examples of this, but what about if the cargo were a person, but the person being shipped is being shipped at their request? Perhaps they’re in trouble with a crime syndicate, or perhaps they’re a crime boss escaping a situation that has got too hot.
… and if it’s a crime boss, perhaps they’re now in a situation of being marked men/women if they don’t deliver him/her; and marked men/women if they do because (s)he knows they have seen him/her.
