Day 330: Walking A Lot…

Talking a little. I found myself walking along enjoying the morning and forgetting that I was supposed to be talking.

“Jane Carver of Waar” just came out. I’m about a third of the way through it, and it’s really good! Thanks for the heads up.

  2. Tara Li says:

With regards to the printer: If you’re going to have to rent a car – consider stopping in at a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, or the like, and pick up one of the really cheap inkjets they have for $30-40.

    • Ignatz says:

Tari Li is absolutely right. Purchase a printer and treat it as a ‘disposable’. It might turn out to be a whole lot cheaper than the shipping. When you finish with it, ‘gift’ it to someone there in the area. Win-win!

      • You can get a cheap inkjet from Amazon for the same price, have it arrive at your destination ahead of you, not have to waste time at Wal*Mart or Best Buy (really?! Best Buy? I would be surprised if they had anything that cheap), and do the same thing. This is what Nathan’s been talking about doing. It doesn’t cost a penny to ship it from Amazon if you’re a Prime member (like Nathan is). 🙂

        • Tara Li says:

Or you can stop in at Wal-Mart, and not have to waste time finding someone at your destination to receive your item and hold it for you. It was just a suggestion, and a reminder that sometimes, you don’t *HAVE* to involve the whole huge Internet supply chain.

          • In my experience, that is much more work, not less, and involves more expense (tax, gas, my wasted time), but YMMV. Yes, it’s a valid suggestion, though.

        • I guess I was wrong about Nathan being an Amazon Prime member!

          To Nathan:

If your wife really does have Prime membership, you can too for no extra money.

Get her to go to “Your Account”, then “Manage Prime Membership”, then look down the page to “Invite a household member”. Note that it says “Up to four household members may share this membership.” 🙂 If she then puts in your name and the e-mail address you use for Amazon, then your account will get all the same Prime benefits (or at the very least will get the Prime free shipping).

At the end of December I began using Weight Watchers online ($19/mo) which gave me some good information on how I was eating and how I could make small changes to help lose weight. In 2 months I’ve lost 5 pounds pretty much eating the same, but without the extra stuff that I pretty much didn’t realize I was eating. A big help has been the increase in fruit, because on the point system apples, oranges, grapefruit, kiwi and so on are zero points. That is music to a Weight Watcher’s ears. I don’t know if you would benefit from the logging process like I did, but the fruit is good for snacking. Trying new varieties of apples has been wonderful.

As for logging, I realized that I was consuming about 300-500 extra calories a day that I really wouldn’t miss. It really has not destroyed my life!! Cracks me up to hear you say that you don’t want to be miserable without whatever food you are talking about. Anyway, addiction is tough, but once you make the change (I quit smoking for example) the freedom is great and with food, you can indeed have plenty of joy without overdoing it. 200 cal extra a day for 15 days is 3000 cal and that is a pound. 200 lousy calories and that’s 2 pounds a month. 200 calories is not a huge, life-destroying loss. My advice is take it slow or you will be miserable and you will not do it.

I’m a vegetarian and I found a very tasty eggplant with black bean recipe that is very simple. It’s got red bell pepper, onion, garlic, tomatoes, with chili powder and red pepper. The mix of stuff is wonderful. I have another that is lima beans with yellow squash and whole wheat pasta shells. I can send them if you want.

  4. Anita Lewis says:

Sorry to be so talkative. You said the store was around the corner. Have you considered an extra walk there for a small purchase of fruit or vegetable treats a couple times a week? Are you able to fit in any strength training into your week?

  5. Ignatz says:

Nate, another little note concerning the eating thing. I know that when I am really focused on some project or another then I totally (and I mean totally) forget about food. Come to think of it, I space out on the rest of the world. Anyway, if you are at all like me in this regard, then if you can find that ‘happy space’ for focused writing then it may serve you well in two ways at once.

Did you notice that for the last few days, we have lost our little man and the purple route line on the map. Poor guy—-lost again. Must be wandering around Wyoming or something. sigh!

  7. I’ve wondered several times, by the way, about the concern about salt/water weight. While the health impact of salt is very much in question these days (with some indications that it may not cause the problems it was thought to cause), the water weight part has, AFAIK, no negative health impact. It just makes the numbers look less good. 🙂 So … from your *health’s* point of view, I don’t think you should fret one *whit* about water weight. It’s only an issue if you’re trying to beat a number to please yourself or your doctor.

    IANAD, of course.

  8. Val says:

Darn you, Nathan, now I want to make baked beans this weekend! New England baked beans, of course – anything that doesn’t have molasses and salt pork is just pretending to be baked beans. 😉
