Day 369: Manic Monday!

It really is a manic Monday. I’ve got edits flowing in both directions here and Double Share is coming together.

That attitude you are taking toward your edits is worrying. That you’re at the point where you sound to prefer to put out an inferior product just to be done with it could be trouble. Remember how Full Share turned out?

By the way, all of the added “he said” tags really do take the reader out of the moment, especially after having heard the audio version.

    • John Hibdon says:

I agree with Tony completely. I hate “he said” tags, it distracts me and makes me feel like the author thinks I am an idiot and can’t figure out who’s speaking. They have there place but over use is very bad IMHO.

      • Nathan says:

It’s mostly kvetching about whether or not the paragraphs should be split. I think part of the issue is that she’s not “in” the story at the point where she’s applying the tags. We’re talking about it and we’ll probably find a compromise where the tags appear where we agree they need to be and we’ll rely on linked action tags for the rest.

It’s one of those “style” issues that is more problem getting agreement on than anything I think.

  2. Laith says:

Yeah it would be a style thing I think.

That said I was trying to listen to a very highly rated podobook a couple of months ago, the concept was good, the production values high.

But to be honest I can’t speak to the story because listening to constant “he said” and “she said” and “john said” made the work as a whole un-listenable to me. It was the first time I had really noticed it, since I’ve noticed that works I like more trust the reader to follow along and know who is speaking.

Go Tanyth! Rah, rah, rah…. (My vote for next effort)

Maloney calling the ship “Billy” is not really that bad as a good owner would definitely know what the crew calls his ship. It would depend on how he was trying to approach the crew as to whether he used it or not. That, of course, is up to you. He was pretty pleased at the end of DS, so he might have used “Billy” as he was trying to convey how pleased he was with the crew and trying to connect with them.

    • Laith says:

      Good point re: Billy
I can see the point both ways, but I did notice it seemed a bit off when I listened the first time.

That said Maloney was a good enough and manipulative enough owner to try to do that sort of thing.
