Day 374: Sunday Morning

Yesterday got eaten up with yard work. By the time I was free to walk around the block, it was all I could do to walk around my chair.

Sailing has always sounded wonderful to me – go out a good ways, preferably where there’s nobody else around so that damn noise in the back of your head goes away… As for having somewhere to go – or sailing in circles – I’d like to just go out, then I dunno – put the sails away (?) and just float a while, pulling out the e-reader (in a zip-lock bag!) or just sitting and meditating, letting the time go by as it wishes.

Of course, what always struck me as somewhat idyllic about the first three Share novels is the free time Ishmael had – he wasn’t *constantly* getting stuck with “other duties as assigned”. The ship had enough crew – and even perhaps a few extra – to get stuff done during the regular shifts! Ok, sure – Ish helps out from time to time on the side, when he feels like it – but there’s no make-work going on, cleaning stuff that’s *INSANELY* clean already, or moving stuff around just to move it back the next day.

Or maybe that was just my experience in the military, and in schooling, and in my regular job, and it isn’t like that for everyone.

Nate, about that new shed in the back. May I suggest you go a bit further with it? Make it larger than you are currently considering so that it has room for some proper office space. Insulate the structure beyond normal spec, both for heat exclusion/retention as well as with an eye towards holding back noise. Then build in a cozy little recording booth (yet more insulation), run lines for power and internet and – presto! – you’re in business.

Or even just a focusing antenna to get to the house wireless connection for internet.

Also a small electric space heater for winter and on those oppressively hot days maybe one of the small window air units? Obviously you wont be able to record when its on but that isn’t too often in North Colorado. These seems to be the space you’ve been looking for!

Can’t help but wonder if you’d be better off without the internet in your writers shed. Try and capture some of the benefits of the place you had at the oregon workshop. Get coffee making facilities, a desk and a chair and you’re good to go 🙂
