Day 378: Baby, It’s Cold Outside

We don’t get that many cold, raw days but this was one. I didn’t dress for it so I about froze my buns off.

And yes, I sing in this one.

Nate, just what is this baloney with the teaching you have signed up for and the low/no pay arrangements? If I remember correctly from an earlier podcast you mentioned the pay for your latest internet teaching course working out to the princely sum of $2 a day (or did I get that wrong and it was per hour?). Now you are alluding to a situation in which you might be required to tutor a single, indolent student for absolutely no remuneration whatsoever!? Given that you are a successful author and that your book sales are generating an income which is (according to you) superior to what your last full time teaching contract paid, I confess that I am hard pressed to understand what exactly entices you to take on this sort of teaching work (with but a meager salery) which demands not only a fair chunk of your time but also carries with it the potential for further financial abuse? Or to put it another way (to paraphrase Mur Lafferty)… You should really be writing.

There is no way that I would give him an incomplete, even if I was going to get paid to teach him. He took the class and had the same opertunity to pass as everyone else. I strongly believe we are accountable for our actions and I would never expect to get a break when I did NOT do the work. He should have dropped. BUT that is just me. I guess that is why I only ever taught paid computer/network classes where the students had to pass the class to keep there JOBS. That must be a motivator I guess. I got paid for the students I taught (pass or fail) and I only ever saw them again if they came back for a more advance class. They got a passing grade only if they earned it. Yes I was an A-Hole about that.

But you just don’t get how Universities work these days. Heck, it was only 25 years ago that I nearly had to personally insult a teacher to manage to get a 0.0 GPA for the semester. The kinds of things Dr. Lowell is complaining about doing? These professors *WANTED* to do them! (Well, sorta, I still had at least a couple of semesters left, so I figure they wanted to string me along).

Long story. Learned a hell of a lot more that semester than I did for many years before or after.

About the phone email … Can you turn off sync and manually refresh instead? I used to use mine that way so that when I checked it on my desktop all the mails were still marked unread. Only price is that you have to refresh it yourself often to avoid missing stuff.

Other option of course is to mark stuff you want to see again as unread after you read it on your phone.

Depends on your phone and software I guess so ymmv.
