You should look closely at an Android phone. I am using a Samsung Captivate at the moment. Contract is up and I am tring to decide between the next version Galaxy II or wait for the yet to be released Galaxy III due soon. My phone records directly into MP3 fromat. I have not tried it with a ear bud (don’t have one) but should work. It did have some minor issues with GPS at first but most have been corrected in the Android updates and the new ICS release is looking really great.
    Have fun at BOLTACON.

    • Tara Li says:

Heck – a lot of Android phones have BlueTooth built in, so that makes that fairly easy. (I have a WinTech Filemate Identity tablet – the power control software shows the BlueTooth control, but the tablet doesn’t actually have it built in, IIRC. I suppose I should check!)

Have a great time at BaltiCon, Sar!

With regards to the jump drive having your works – 16GB and 32GB drives are pretty cheap – and sitting on my hard drive is a total of about 8 1/2 GB of audio. A 16GB jump drive should give you plenty of room for now – and a 32GB would certainly. With a nightly mirror across, and switching which one you use as the primary each day – you could keep damn near everything live and handy.

  4. I’m sorry I cannot, yet again, get to BaltiCon. I really do want to go some year. I hope you’re having a great time, Nathan! I’d say “Say hi to Tee, Pip, Laura and Cmaaaaaaaaaaaar! and all the gang for me!” but you’ve got lots of stuff to focus on already. =)

    Hey Nathan,

You said you didnt’ set up the feed in Itunes but i do use itunes to both retrieve your feed bank and wirelessly sync to my IPOD (old Iphone3GS) its just easier to bank all my feeds in itunes, the only hasle is i must occassionally hit refresh subscription in itunes to get new podcasts on external feeds, because of this i regularly fall a week or two behind thus I comment on week old podcasts often. I am a Mac guy (never again suffer a window pain) but i will tell you the iphone sucks for podcast recording and the pay apps are not very well made IMHO. But if you find an iphone solution Please do share your experiences.

    • Paul says:

For field recordings i use an H1 recorder and a sony wireless mic clip. Tried for three month’s to find a “cheap iphone” solution before i realized that was an oxymoron.

      • Chris Miller and a couple of others recently posted an episode of From Python Import Podcast recorded directly on an iPhone. I don’t know how he did it, but there is in fact a voice recorder included on the phone (see http://www.apple.com/iphone/built-in-apps/more-built-in-apps.html – look for the Voice Memos app). The bigger problem for Nate (a Linux user) would be the fact that iPhones want to be connected to iTunes, which requires Mac OS X or Windows to this day, AFAIK.

I assume you were dissatisfied with the built-in option for some reason?

        • Paul Bellah says:

Thanks Stephen, I use voice memo, but the iPhone does not connect to blue tooth via voice memo, you must use a wired connection from the mic to the iPhone which in my opinion is just not good enough considering just about any other non apple phone will record via bluetooth earbud. There are some expensive apps that do connect via bluetooth. I did however find a studio quality method to record to the iPhone via bluetooth but it is not really the best way to do this. Recording from the bluetooth earbud and mic would be easier. I made a simple youtube example here…

You actually can use iTunes on other platforms such as windows it is not restricted to the mac and is a free download.
