Day 39: Webinars? No.

In the aftermath of yesterday’s excitement, I’m rather bleary this morning. Sorry about that. At least I had daylight to walk in.

I tried to get on a webinar (a class on digitizing–he teaches his stuff-and knows it) on Firefox twice where it didn’t work at all. Finally got to of tech support and 2 days later he commented, “you were on Safari, weren’t you?” NOOOOOO, I wasn’t. They forgot to mention the fact that Firefox is not set up for the webinar on Macs. Has to be Safari. Next class was clear easy and I actually learned something about digitizing. Too bad they forgot this little fact at first. Like headphones?

    1) Do you think the Second Life style interface works better for webinar-type things, where people can do more than type in the chat rooms while someone presents a power-point? I know quite a few do make the mistake of using SL that way, but it doesn’t have to be…

    2) We’re coming up on a period when various sources of energy will become ubiquitous – fusion, maybe, space-based solar collection, perhaps – and this near-limitless energy will allow us to recycle things endlessly, to the point where all of the material needs will be essentially free. Digital reproduction already means many of the mental “needs” – entertainment, learning – is essentially free. (Evolution means the free-to-copy-and-improve educational materials will get better and better, displacing most, if not all, of the junk we now have because we’re just *NOW* learning what this kind of culture really means)

Very soon – the *ONLY* limited resource we will have will be – attention. I’ll admit – you get a lot of my attention already. I’m basically devoting 20-30 mins of my 24 limited available hours of attention, to your podcast. More, when a new book comes out, or I decide to reread/relisten to one of the older ones again.

I wonder what effect that will have on things – when the majority of the human race’s job is simply to pay others with attention…

  3. If my ankle is healed enough by then and if you can assure me your walk will end at Panera Bread, I’m in 😉
