I’m loving the capabilities of this new device.

I connect my Android phone to Kubuntu which is basically Ubuntu with the KDE desktop all the time. My phone has the Gingerbread version of Android. When I first plug it in there is a beep telling me it is charging the battery then a few seconds delay then I get a very small usb icon at the very top on the (don’t know what it is called) I guess the task bar. If I drag it down there is a usb notice. I tap that and it goes through the connection stuff where I have to tap a couple of times and I have a full connection. I load the file manager copy files to and from the phone. I have only done this with music file and I did have to figure out where the mp3 files were stored on the phone but it was easy after that. I do this once a month or so to change the music on my phone. It took me an hour or so the first time I did this, just to SEE the little usb icon show up and wonder what it was. You are most likely using the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) version of Android but ICS should not have taken that feature away. Yes I know SHOULD is a big word sometimes.

The combination of Ice Cream Sandwich and Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) is apparently the issue.

Ubuntu is already prompting me to upgrade to Pangolin and I may take the plunge one of these days. In the meantime, dropbox serves the function nicely and I need to put the tech down and get on with reading and writing 🙂

Here is something for Gingerbread and Oneiric: http://blog.musicvm.com/connect-android-samsung-note-phone-linux-ubuntu

When you plug the usb cable into the pc and do ‘lsusb’, do you see the device listed?

12.04 is very nice. It seems to run better than 11.10 did. It doesn’t look different–no big learning curve this time!

        • Tara Li says:

I’m probably stuck once I move up to 11.04. Nothing higher seems to have Enlightenment 16 in the repos.

          • Anita Lewis says:

Is E17 not good? I know I resisted the upgrade in Gnome and the change to Unity, but it has grown on me.

          • Tara Li says:

E16 was first and foremost a window manager. E17, the E team got the “desktop environment” bug from the Gnome & KDE people.

        • Nathan says:

Anita and others, when I plug in the cable the operating system doesn’t even recognize the mount.

Ok, now I just tried it again and for some reason it’s showing up in both dmesg and lsusb.

It doesn’t mount the device but it registers as xhci_hcd and I see “04e8:6860 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd” on the lsusb.

Hm. I’m trying to remember if I’ve rebooted since yesterday morning.

          WTH?

          • Nathan says:

            And now it works.

            Ok. Nevermind.

Maybe I just needed to reboot.

            Or something.

          • Anita Lewis says:

On my Android tablet I have to tap on a button that says “Mount” It also has the option to just stay attached to recharge. If I don’t tap on “Mount” in a short time, it defaults to recharge and does not mount. Like John Hibdon, I can pull down on that usb icon at the top and I can then tap on that and get the screen with the “Mount” button, if I miss it or had chosen to recharge only previously and changed my mind.

I’m thinking you forgot the two llamas and the rubber chicken wave.

      • John W Hibdon says:

Forgot to mention that I am on 12.04. I booted my old Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) updated it and it worked same as always. Must be something in Ice Cream Sandwich that don’t like Oneiric Ocelot (11.10). I upgraded my test box and that went ferry well. I don’t really know why but I always format the kubuntu partition delete the .kde directory in HOME and reinstall the next release on my working system. Been doing it that way sence Dapper Drake. Most likely more work than I need to do. If I can find a good ICS ROM for my Captivate I well bump it to ICS and see if I have any problems with that, been looking at doing that any way.

      • John W Hibdon says:

ICS use a different structure for file transfer. Researching that now. Anita’s link has good pointers but you keep writing I will do what I can to nail this down. I just need an ICS ROM for my phone. Looking for good one.

I was just listening to Ravenwood again last night, and it struck me…

The sound quality on this phone, with the wired mike, is pretty damned good! Outside, where you get the occasional background noises (though not nearly as much as you were getting), you couldn’t do it – but inside, in a somewhat quieter environment, I’d almost swear you could use the output from this for your podiobooks.

  3. Tibbi says:

Another lovely walk. And we would never SAY you were overdue on a new book. That would be rude. 🙂

  4. memline says:

Tara Li, I had the same thought when I was listening. The sound quality of Nathan’s voice comes through very nicely. I think you are right. Neat!
