Day 42: Advertising

Sparked by something from the latest episode of Dragon Page, I got to thinking about how the market has changed.

You will find away to write, hell you’re only sleeping 3 hours a night right? Your family has to sleep sometime?

I know I’m kind of playing with you about it, but you can do it. You’re like the Rocky Balboa for us write/podcasters. Now get in there and get something done.

I’m a family guy myself and know all to well about managing time between family and writing. I hope you daughter gets better, I’d use summer school as a threat… I mean a motivation to get her to go. But then (and this is way off left base) I’d ask myself what would Pip do? I think he could handle kids, say like in a story where there’s this dad how loves his kids, but gets a little frustrated with what’s going on and he… well? What would he do? You’ll have to tell us, preferably by way of a book/podcast.

You’ve got a gift. Write my friend.

One thought I had that MAY help, with the emphasis intended, is that you have to shift your thinking. There will always be interruptions, family, esp. daughters, phones, extraneous assignments, etc, soooo, you have to switch your thinking. For one thing, writing is your job. The other stuff you want to do, giving comfort and moral support, etc, but your JOB is writing and your way of supporting said family.. Therefore, they have to cooperate by not disturbing you when writing, helping you carve out your writing space away from the hustle-bustle of life, turn off or answer the phone and tell whoever is for you that you will call back after you finish the day’s writing, etc. I ran into this when I went back to school; I couldn’t get my homework done (lots of writing) and I finally had to establish “unavailable mom zones.” That is why offices, such as the one at your school, are essential. You need a place to close the door and be assured that someone better be dying if they interrupt. Maybe renting a dump with electricity is the answer. How about the shop? garage? attic?

Next week I’m going to try David Dalglish’s method and take myself to the library to write. It’s really a challenge, especially when I want to do more than produce one or two thousand words in a day. You are not alone.
