Day 463: Cool Sunday

It was almost chilly but by the time I got to the talking bit, I’d worked up a sweat. The mile counter ticked over at just over 17 minutes per mile today 🙂

Well, there’s a fair bit of handwavium in the Share series – the Burlson engines, the gravity generation, the inertial dampeners, even the sails & grav keel. However, if you’re doing an interstellar travel story that doesn’t involve just Alpha Centauri or generation ships, you’ve got to use cargo container loads of handwavium to cover FTL travel.

Enemies don’t have to be people, either – Ish’s enemy in the first three Share novels is his unfamiliarity with Spacer life. And while it’s not really a life & death struggle (well, except for the CME event), the emotional strain can be just as huge.

As for the Tanyth stories, she has two enemies: her awareness of how old Girdy Pinecrest is and the fear she might not get to meet her in time, or that she would refuse to teach Tanyth – and coming into her powers and fearing for her sanity. The bandits really aren’t villains, so much as distractions.

So while you only have a couple of “villains” per se – you have some *great* enemies!

Just an article you might find interesting – I have to say, even in SciFi, tech is often lost. Then again, we should consider the speed at which the tech changes.

Just wanted to say that I loved hearing about your Coast Guard days! I can tell you that walking around barefoot in Atlantic City is DEFINITELY not something you wanna do nowadays, though. ^_^

I too just wanted to say thanks for the real life stories. You ever wanna write them down I’ll buy the book 😀
