2 points for 31, Nathan. (We play cribbage a lot in my house.)
I’ve often thought that the current educational system could use serious improvement. I like the sound of the math textbook you found – I would dearly love to re-read it myself.
Other resources, I think, would include Isaac Asimov’s various science essays – I never grokked imaginary numbers until I read his essay on them, and his essay on the relativity of wrong led me to the realization that if I ever have to teach a general science class, my first statement to the class will be along the lines of “Everything I’m about to teach you is essentially a lie – but it’s a *useful* lie, and I’ll explain why as we go along…” James Burke’s The Day The Universe Changed and Connections series is another set of works that truly should be used in all classes. I’d love to see Walt Disney’s Fantasia, and Fantasia 2000, continued the way he meant it to be – every two or three years, re-releasing it with older segments pulled and newer segments replacing them, until a significant body of these segments is available for teachers to use in teaching music and art appreciation.
Then again, that’s one of the things I liked most about the Trader’s Tales – that through it all, Ishmael kept pushing and pushing learning (of course, the ability to demonstrate competency and advance as fast as able, even skipping segments if you can just show you can do them made it sound rather utopian – I don’t believe I can imagine a bureaucracy that would allow that to happen. Does the real Merchant Marines allow something like that?) However, I wouldn’t have minded if you’d pulled the trigger on the downloaded course materials that Ish picked up from the University of Neris, rather than limiting it to the laptop being used by Pip & Cookie, and later the laptop saving the ship. I expect Bri and some of the others in the environmental section might have found some of the biology stuff worth reviewing…
