One important point to consider is that social good is not necessarily the same as good for the Powers That Be. A black or grey market acts as competition for the official economy. To some extent, I think the private trading done by the spacers at the flea markets acts as this, but not nearly on a large enough scale to be effective – though it has its own uses as well.
Ultimately, there will never be a way to force all transactions to be recorded – direct face to face barter prevents that. We see this already to a fair extent in those using card-based government aid, where on that assistance buys things not for themselves, but to trade for something they cannot buy with the card.
Just relistened to this podcast, and was struck by your mention of how your sister had done what she wanted to do – and I remembered your story of how she would hunt the one deer each year, as well as your time at sea.
And I was reminded once again of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem “Requiem”.
