Great to hear you got the book out! Is it a coincidence that you managed an under 16-minute mile this morning?! I’m thinking you got some energy released from that bit of progress. Sounds like you are on a roll that makes you happy and that makes me happy, too.

    Congratulations! You sound energized.

I’m keeping my eyes open for FS; still hasn’t shown up. When it does, I’ll replace the Ridan version on my reader. The story may not have changed much, but “support your favorite authors” and all that.

I have to disagree with you about mailing the list to you, and about people not having flown as well.

    1) You are an oddity – a concerned parent pays attention to what your children do and are involved with in school. It’s sad, but there you are. A mailed-out letter, even certified, would most likely have just been tossed or skimmed and forgotten. By having the gathering, the school administration can testify that they saw and discussed this directly with the parents, should it come to a lawsuit about one of the kids doing something to piss off the TSA agents. And I don’t know the full demographics of the high school your children attend, but it could well be that half or more of the parents don’t have an e-mail address, or at least one they recognize as such, as they just log into the computers at work to get the latest memos from Corporate and don’t necessarily realize that the e-mail address they use may be gated to the Internet at large.

    2) There’s a bit more to your familiarity and comfort with flying. Some of it comes from the positions you’ve held over the years. There’s even today quite a few people who’ve never flown, or even driven more than a hundred miles or so from their birth home. I would be uncomfortable getting set up to fly, as I’ve only flown 4 times, to and from Ft. Knox, and to and from Ft. Benning, and the arrangements all four times were made by Uncle Sugar, for training relating to the National Guard. This was, mind you, some 10 years before 9/11, and it’s nearly 12 years after, so that’s a pretty vast span. A lot of people just never have any *reason* to fly, and so they don’t. (BTW, I am one of these “privileged white males” you are beating your chest over being a member of… I don’t feel that privileged.)

Direct stimulation of the pleasure center for advertising – Crichton’s “The Terminal Man”, Niven’s “tasps” and “wireheads”. Scary, and nasty.
