The Miles Vorkosigan books are all still published through Baen, but Baen finally just gave in and started using Amazon. They had been battling with Amazon for a long time over prices and the fact that they liked to sell ebook bundles on their own website. The prices did end up going up (used to all be around $6), but I heard they also raised author rates so … meh. Anyway, they sell ebooks that are out as mass market at $6.99, ebooks out as trade paperback at $8.99, and ebooks only out as hardcover at $9.99. I’m not entirely happy about it, but it’s a lot better than most publishers.

Most of David Drake’s books are 6.99 now as well.

    Baen got beat down 🙁

Ms. Bujold has had an issue with Baen, as somehow she was set up in the Baen CD-ROM project, although from discussion in one group, she did not fully understand what was to be put on that CD-ROM (namely, her entire backlist of Vorkosigan novels, save Memory) and accused more than a few people of piracy.

As I understand it, what Baen is aiming to do is put all of the Baen Free Library books out as new editions, which would have a price on their site, as well as Amazon, while leaving the older editions as freebies.

Ultimately, I’m going to wait and see what Baen ends up doing. Their latest E-books newsletter says they plan to have some new books coming out soon in the BFL, which will be wonderful I think.

It’s a strange new world we’re living in, with contributions from Aldous Huxley and George Orwell – but from Sir Thomas More, as well…

Thanks for clarifying that – I did not realise what was going on. About this deal with Amazon, I wonder what will this mean for readers want to buy e-books in EPUB or other formats than supported by Amazon. The AZW format is proprietary, given its strange compression operations on what is a MOBI variant.
