These days, I believe what used to be called Marketing is now called Market Analysis, with perhaps the more hands-on application of it (actually asking customers what they need and di stilling that into the key things we could do to make as many sales as possible/keep as many customers as possible happy) being called Inbound Marketing. Outbound Marketing, on the other hand, is what most people think of as Marketing–promotion.

      Yeah .. I’ve been talking with some b-school people and the whole “marketing is what you do to figure out what products to sell” thing has largely disappeared.

      Inbound marketing is more like “how to position your products so that when people are looking for stuff, they find yours.”

      Outbound marketing is more like “hey. buy my book. it’s great.”
