Nate, a suggestion for that bunged up fingernail. Take a small bit of thin, semi-stiff card stock (such as might be used for 3 x 5 note cards), cut out a small piece that more or less matches the size of your fingernail, bending it to match the curve of said nail and then use a droplet or two of super-glue to secure that bit of card onto the nail. What one ends up with is (temporary) reinforcement) of the fingernail. I often resort to using this technique what with working in the wood shop from time to time and encountering the same sort of nail-splitting occurrence.
