Day 777: Back In The Groove

I spent the last 24 hours thinking about public policy. It feeds into a lot of different levels of thinking but I talked about it today as part of a systemic ill in current US society.

Oh, the idea of the Basic Income… so very seductive, and so very very tricky. 200M * 15K = 3T, by the way. It’s nice – but I don’t think it can work under a democratic government, as it’s a very different economic system from our current one. The problem, I think, with our current system is that there are no “sinks”, where excess money is removed from the system, other than in “crashes” in the stock market, maybe (though generally, even a stock market crash just moves the money around – it doesn’t actually remove any from play, long term).

Oh, I don’t think it’s anything that could possibly be adopted by the US.

I wonder how 3T compares to what we’re paying now.

We’re going to need to do something about poverty … other than “wait and see.”

Every other social ill – from the economy to education to civil rights – they’re all rooted in it. The patchwork approach won’t work on a systemic problem.

3T is, from something I saw last night though I haven’t checked, about what we’re paying now. And I agree, a patchwork approach will not work. We are, for the most part, at a local minimum within the economic/political system field, where the Basic Income/other political system would be a new local minimum (and hopefully, a global minimum), but it takes a significant energy input to bump us over the edge into the new energy well. Your Central Planets Joint Committees might well be that new form of government – somewhat oligarchal, but with no one Committee over the others, and no specific executive, it might work out well. I do presume, however, that “Central Planets” is becoming an outdated misnomer, and that the non-Central Planets sectors get some say… Then again, that might be the source of an upcoming phase in the Solar Clipper universe, that honestly, I hope you never bother writing – there’s more than enough Boom-Boom out there already.
