Day 78: Parsec Mutters

I muse on the reality that I have less that five days to get the Parsec Award submission put together. Ack!!

About pirated ebooks: I feel strongly that ebooks should not cost more than $5 and I gladly pay that. I also love the advantage of having an ereader that reads epub format so that I can go online to my library and download ebooks that are readable for up to 4 weeks. (Audio as well!)

Several months ago I was looking for an older book in epub format and found it. I found it on a site in a group of other books and I downloaded the batch. It was not right, but I did it. I looked through the batch of books and saw some authors I had never read. I tried some and liked them.

Then one night I had trouble going to sleep as I thought about this business. I thought about what to do and came up with this: For every one of those books that I read, I would go to B&N and purchase another book by that author. This way I would be paying $5 per book and I would be buying a book that I would otherwise not buy, because I would not even have known about that author. To my mind this was win/win.

Along that same line, I saw a 99 cent book, _Containment_ by Gandlin, listed right under Full Share when I looked to see the Sci Fi standings on Amazon. I checked at B&N and they had the same deal. I didn’t think twice about spending $1 for it after reading two paragraphs of the sample. I will no doubt look for Gandlin again. I think the 99 cent thing works for a new author.

B&N has Free Friday. About half the time those look interesting to me. I’ve gotten interested in a few authors that way. As I recall Elizabeth Moon was one of them that I’d not heard of and she came up as a free book on Friday.

So, pirated, legally free, and cheap have made later sales to me. Selling at $5 keeps me buying.

      Got mixed up here:
Containment is by Christian Cantrell. The other book I got is $5 and it is _Hidden Institute_ by Brand Gamblin, not Gandlin. That was someone I found out about through Nate, I think. I thought I heard that you did the cover art. Did I get that right?

      • Nathan says:

Yes, I did the cover art for Brand. He’s a sounding board for a lot of my ideas, and vice versa. He’s very talented and disciplined author.

Chris Cantrell’s Containment is one that shows on my “also bought” list a lot, too. I got the sample but haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

I found Naomi Novik when I found her first book for free at Amazon. I have purchase all the rest. I am struggling with my conscience on how I want to purchase Nathan’s books I have read. I have purchased the ones on Amazon and I need to donate to Podiobooks for all of them. I need to support Podiobooks and Nathan. I will get it done.

  3. Good luck on your Parsec submission. They will also hear your voice in the submission for “Geek Out! with Mainframe” too. (Too bad I couldn’t just send them that whole interview).

Hi dont want to sway you but the moment Ish and his day met for the first time after years was a great moment in writing and audio for me. It would be in my top six for the parsec.
