Day 836: Fraidy Friday

I started the day with a scare…which I talk all about.

The problem was a video card that had been jarred loose from the cage while I was fiddling with network cables. The network issue was ISP related.

Bottom line: All better now.

But I’m double checking my backups.

Oh, for Pete’s sake!! I sent wild tweets in worry and feeling your pain. I bought that external case for drives though and it is a good thing to have on hand. So, there was a card in it after all and not just the chipset. And as usual you do all kinds of things to get the network going and find it is outside. How many times that has happened to me, especially in my early Linux days when I was not sure if my system got broke on an update etc. I’m so happy and relieved to hear it worked out. And I was very proud of you getting out there for the walk with that hanging over your head. Good going!! I would not have been able to do that.

While not on topic to today’s talk, there was an interesting thread on self-publishing in the digital age over in Scalzi world. That is a topic that you have touched on many times before so I thought that you and your band of listeners might find it interesting.

It has been a pleasure to listen to you this week. The energy and inquisitive mind seem to be back in full force.

Money still flows toward the author. The only question is how much of it you have to invest and where in the process.

Traditional publishing takes their nine tithes on the back end, offering the author’s tithe in terms of advance and – with luck – future royalties.

Self publishers pay a la carte prices for the services that the traditional publishers do.

In both cases, the services are – largely – the same and the author pays for them.
