Perhaps not my place, but I’m going to recommend a great indie book by a basically unknown author. The Emperor’s Finest by Melissa Cuevas. The setting is military science fiction, but I think the relationship between the main characters takes center stage. It just feels so messed up and real to me. Prepare to cringe at the cover though.
Try the Democracy series, it is 2 books and not bad. Also by Nuttall
