Day 893: Friday Folly

I’ve so much to do today. I want to do only very small amounts of any of it.

Let’s see out it plays out.

I think the main reason people like pre-orders is the fire-and-forget factor – they hear their favorite author mention a new book coming out, so they pre-order it, and then when it shows up, it’s like Christmas or their Birthday has arrived. Of course, for the mainstream publishers, it gave some clue as to how large of an initial print run to make, but with the coming of e-books, that’s not nearly as big a factor.

For the author themselves, though, I can’t see pre-orders doing anything useful. And if you’re still in the PoD stage of paper copies, it’s not that useful, either.

I’m curious as to why Amazon requires exclusivity for their services. Are they hoping to bank on an author making it big and having the next Twilight or Harry Potter-esque book or series? A way to monopolize on profits should something go viral?

It’s interesting, the insights you give into the business of writing. I haven’t been listening long, but so far it’s been a great listen, and is steering me to take up writing again to see if I can improve my skills.

They want to control the content to insure that people think of Amazon FIRST when looking for a book they might have heard about.

Which – it’s not like people don’t, for the most part. Just like “Google” is in danger of becoming generic for searching on the Internet. That part of trademark law is going to take a beating soon.
