    Nathan,

I think you hit on something there, you started Double Share with him boarding a shuttle to go to his first post with DST, why not complete the circle with him exiting a shuttle on Port Newmar on a quest to find himself again. It sounds good it has some good balance and if he did not take a fast packet you can have it be 2 or 3 months since Owners share. Glad to hear you are making progress.

We could laugh and point or we could just get plane tickets to Colorado since the humidity is getting old here in Virginia!

  3. Tony says:

Ish has always gone with the flow of what came his way. This is a recurring theme.

    Much simplified examples:
He was going to just drift in college. The berth on the Lois was his to lose thanks to Pip’s aunt (I can’t recall her name). He got his ratings because he could, not because he knew what he wanted to do. He went to the Academy because he was told he should. He took the first (only?) job offer in Diurnia without researching his other options. He got married because that’s what adults do. He started his own business because someone else wanted him to.

If you keep with this theme then the idea to leave Diurnia needs to come from someone else. Perhaps he tries to make a living on the station, but struggles due to his own indecisiveness, the media, and unwanted attention because of his most eligible bachelor status. Maybe, as you mentioned, his engineer suggests he get out of dodge and go to Port Newmar. Or maybe she has a specific reason that a person needs to go there and he fits the bill.

    OR

You could change this theme and have him start making some serious choices about what -he- wants to do with his life. In order for this to work I think it would need to be a big deal in the story. Maybe he wants to look for that place that feels like home. His home in Diurnia has always been the ship he was on (regardless of the apartment). Those are gone for him. His home as a child was with his mother–gone. Then it was the Lois, likewise not an option. But then it was Port Newmar. He spent formative years there and it might be the closest thing to a home he had that is still an option.

    *shrug* Just rambling thoughts.

    • Nathan says:

Tony, the nature of the new books is that Ishmael is going to try to follow his own path instead of one that’s picked out for him.

  4. Roy Madison says:

A little off topic from the podcast, but I was wondering what program you use to record on you phone. Do you have a special mic, or just a headset?

    • Nathan says:

Just a headset. I use a wired headset for the podcast because the bluetooth one picks up too much noise.

      • Roy Madison says:

        Thanks for the tip.
Is there just a basic recorder on android, or did you need to buy one with better features?

More on the subject, I’m excited to hear about Ishmael’s next adventure. With the financial success, in a way, he has too many choices.
