It might be a part of Ish’s therapy to have a new woman in his life, or an old friend re-visited – – not Beverly Arith, but Brilliantine Smith, who to my mind always was unfinished business. I could see Chief Stevens – – married three times, I think you mentioned – – making a mild joke about getting back up on the bicycle. And Brill could be a counter to the “gold diggers” that Ish, now a really rich man after Kristine Maloney buys him out – – would be endlessly exposed to – – maybe a scene with an over-enthusiastic pursuer in an orbital restaurant?
I’m also wondering about Ish, women and the whelkies. It seems to be that Ish only give whelkies to the women in his life – – never one given to Pip, for example, or Cookie, or his father. Is there a meaning behind this?
He’s only given whelkies to people he’s connected to emotionally and at an inflection point juncture of their lives.
Remember that the whelkie lore says that the whelkie finds it’s owner when the owner needs it. We don’t really know what happens between the new owners and their whelkies after Ishmael gives them.
