What a thought provoking lesson I just received from Mr. Lowell. The businessman, the artist and the fish. I had never heard the story before but now it seems to clarify so many things I too have taken for granted. I shall remember this lesson well Captain.
Thanks for the wonderful story, and for the return of TOMMW. Greatly appreciate the insights about trusting instinct and process. Reminded me about valuing the positive aspects of AD/HD. Ever heard of the Hunter v Farmer approach?:
I know the koan as the artist and the crane or heron. In the version I know the businessman is upset because the painting costs $10,000 for seconds of work. And the artist says no. It costs $10,000 for the months of work in the cabinet that led to the moment where the crane logo can fly.
I actually thought of this version during ‘In Ashes Born’.
I knew this story too, but from “Super Why” a kids program on PBS. I was just checking in to see if anyone else had commented.
I never made the connection between the story and the logo in “Ashes Born”, but it makes sense (whether it was intentional or not.)
So lovely! So touched by your telling of the story, thank you!!
Resonated in so many places for me-, do you recall Socrates’ story of people watching shadows on a cave wall thinking they were ” real”, when the real was “ideal” form;
Also recalled a story of person on safari, being shown the tracks of a lion, and following the tracks, then noticing the blurring twist to the print, and realizing that the lion in the future had turned to look. To see that person in the past. To be tracking the future self…
To be following/ be present to the thread that the pearls of awareness are strung upon
Remember, each paragraph you write is another fish drawn looking for The Fish.

I haven’t, no. 🙂
A link to Wikipedia apparently got truncated from my previous post. Perhaps this URL fragment will be allowed: Hunter_vs._farmer_hypothesis

YES! I think that might be it.
Thank you!

Yes. I often liken storytelling to the allegory of the cave. 🙂
