Day 1109: Recovering

So, I lost my main machine yesterday. She was a good ole girl. Served me well. I’ve got her hard drive mounted in a different box and I’m recovering all the lost settings and such.

It’s going to be a long day of resetting passwords on accounts I’ve forgotten, I’m afraid.

For a long time I was resistant to the idea of using any sort of online password keeper. With a background in IT, the idea of using something online for that always kinda gave me the creeps. I’ve finally succumbed, just simply because it was getting to the point where there were sites requiring more and more complex passwords (I think the US Post Office was the breaking straw for me, although we’ve also got a piece at work that’s a pain). As a plus I’ve started moving to a lot of random passwords for things, which is a far cry better than my old solution where I tended to use the same or similar far too much. (What can I say, I’m an IT guy, I never felt the need to practice what I preach :).) I’ve used both keepass (which is local only, which can be bad in a drive failure obviously), and now has largely started using lastpass myself. I felt reasonably confident in the security of these.

God I hate rebuilding machines. It’s something I do way too much.

Gary makes a good point, I use keepass also and you can export the database file to a flash drive for safe keeping. I would suggest you give it a try, it is a nice and easy app to use.
