I used to use a double panier or whatever it is called. That was better than the basket. Of course, I shopped for just one person and went usually twice a week. Later I got one of those pull carts and filled it up once a week.

I’ve never used toe clips and I cannot see using them for the riding you are planning. I have tried them and found them more a hazard than a help even for more lengthy rides.

I’m liking your idea a lot. I’ve curtailed my riding due to heavier traffic on the way to the gym that I used to go to. Now I do walking on the days when I used to go there. I still go to another gym with aerobic class twice a week and do some other things, but my bike riding is pretty much just a couple miles to church on Sunday and then home again. I have a nice quiet, straight road for that trip. One mile to the store will work. And definitely, go small on the load. It is soooo easy to get too much and then you are just stuck with it once you get out to the bike. Start out very small.

It is interesting hearing in the talk about what the other beta readers are finding. I thought it was pretty obvious that Natalya grew up with her parents mostly in CPJCT space. Her father went to Toe-hold after their separation. I also felt pretty confident that Natalya knew she was being taken with the high repair price, but she didn’t know of a better way to fix it other than to go and make the money she would need. She also had other good reasons for taking that job with Trask.

I would say it may be prudent to add a little bit more in a couple of areas or maybe take a different approach to them if you have something better in mind, but don’t go overboard in trying to handhold the less attentive readers that you start to bore the rest.

I haven’t read the beta, but I got the impression in the short story that her father had taken her into Toe-Hold space on several occasions before. So while she may have grown up in CPJCT space, I was expecting her (after reading only the short) to know a fair amount about Toe-Hold space.

I “grew up” entirely in Texas, but my father took me on several vacations into Colorado, so I’m familiar with Pagosa Springs, Durango, Silverton, Mesa Verde, Pike’s Peak, the Tetons, and so on. But I never “lived” in Colorado.

So, I would expect Natalya to have about as good an understanding of Toe Hold as I have of Colorado. From what I’m hearing, she doesn’t.

Not quite my two cents, but maybe 3/4 of a penny.

I went to Like this comment, Dan.

      -.-

Yes. You’re right. She *does* know more than it appears, so I have to get it onto the page.
